DNA & GENETIC GENEALOGY

Genetic Genealogy combines the power of DNA with traditional genealogy methods, providing a deeper understanding of your family history.

This type of research involves taking a Autosomal DNA test (via companies such as Ancestry or MyHeritage) enabling DNA match analysis to be conducted. This works by comparing segments of an individual’s DNA with others in a database to identify shared genetic material. Close relatives will share larger segments of DNA, while more distant relatives will share smaller segments. By analysing the amount and length of these shared segments, it’s possible to estimate the relationship between individuals. The data is then compared against known genealogical information to confirm or refine potential family connections, enabling a genetic family tree to be constructed.

Over recent years, DNA testing for Genetic Genealogy become significantly more affordable and accessible to the general public. With television such as the BBC’s 'Who do you think you are?', as well as ITV’s 'Long Lost Family' and 'DNA journey' highlighting to the masses what can be achieved using this technology.

Here are some examples of how Genetic Genealogy can enhance research:
• Extending your family tree: Traditional genealogy relies on paper records like birth certificates and census data, which can sometimes be incomplete or have gaps. Genetic genealogy uses DNA testing to help you discover connections beyond what's written down, potentially going back much further in time. Think of it as another tool in your kit to find more of your family history.
• Confirming relationships: Sometimes, family stories and records might have conflicting information or not be entirely clear. DNA testing can help confirm or clarify relationships, providing more reliable evidence to support your family tree. It's like getting a scientific confirmation of who you're related to.
• Finding unknown relatives: DNA testing can connect you with living relatives you might not know about. By comparing your DNA with others, you may discover cousins or other family members who can add new branches to your family tree or offer new records. This can help you find people who share a common ancestor with you, expanding your family network.
• Solving family mysteries: Genetic genealogy can help solve long-standing family mysteries, such as finding biological parents of adoptees or uncovering unknown biological relatives. Sometimes, secrets come to light when DNA results reveal relationships that were not previously known.
